次の英文を読んでください。
A model is useful not because it reproduces every detail of reality, but because it leaves out details that are irrelevant to the question being asked. A map that showed every stone, tree, and crack in the road would be as complicated as the territory itself and therefore almost useless as a map. The same principle applies to scientific theories. Simplification is not necessarily a defect; it can be the very reason a model helps us understand a complex system.
Yet simplification creates a danger. A feature that is irrelevant for one purpose may be essential for another. An economic model that ignores differences between individuals might successfully predict total consumption while failing badly when used to predict who will suffer from a particular policy. Thus, the quality of a model cannot be judged independently of the purpose for which it is used. The important question is not simply whether a model is true or false, but whether the information it discards matters for the decision at hand.
